Purchase and placement

I buy modern and contemporary art

Post-war, Art Informel, ZERO, pop and artists working now: I buy the work, or I place it. The first look from your photographs is free. When we agree, I pay — without waiting for the next auction.

If a direct purchase is not the right path, I place the work with a collector or in the auction that fits. That is on a success fee: no sale, no cost.

Fields

What I place, value and follow.

The names are a sample, not a limit. If your artist is missing, send photographs — I will tell you honestly whether there is a market, and where.

Post-war

Art Informel, Tachisme, ZERO and the German post-war avant-garde. A market that has grown for years without overheating, and in which a good provenance makes the difference.

Sought, among others: Wols, Hans Hartung, Emil Schumacher, K. O. Götz, Bernard Schultze, Fred Thieler, Ernst Wilhelm Nay, Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, Günther Uecker, Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Pierre Soulages, Antoni Tàpies, Jean Dubuffet.

Abstract expressionism

American post-war painting — gesture and colour field. Internationally one of the strongest segments, including works on paper and smaller formats.

Sought, among others: Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Sam Francis, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Cy Twombly.

Pop art

From the American classics to German Capitalist Realism. Alongside unique works, well-kept and documented editions are particularly strong.

Sought, among others: Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselmann, James Rosenquist, Robert Indiana, Richard Hamilton, Peter Blake, David Hockney, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Konrad Lueg, Thomas Bayrle.

Contemporary art

From the Neue Wilde and the Leipzig School to current international positions. Contemporary art accounts for a large share of worldwide auction turnover.

Sought, among others: Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, Markus Lüpertz, Jörg Immendorff, A. R. Penck, Martin Kippenberger, Albert Oehlen, Rosemarie Trockel, Neo Rauch, Daniel Richter, Katharina Grosse, Peter Doig, George Condo.

Abstract, concrete & geometric art

Constructive abstraction, Op art and kinetic art — a broad international collector base, including the middle of the market.

Sought, among others: Josef Albers, Max Bill, Richard Paul Lohse, Victor Vasarely, Bridget Riley, Rupprecht Geiger, Gotthard Graubner, Raimund Girke, Imi Knoebel, Blinky Palermo, Jesús Rafael Soto, Jean Tinguely.

Minimal & conceptual art

Reduction, seriality, the idea before the object. Strongly held by museums. Documentation and the catalogue raisonné matter here in particular.

Sought, among others: Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Sol LeWitt, Carl Andre, Robert Ryman, Joseph Kosuth, Lawrence Weiner, Hanne Darboven, On Kawara, Joseph Beuys.

Urban & street art

Editions, prints and unique works are all in demand. Proof of authenticity decides the price.

Sought, among others: Banksy, KAWS, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Invader, Shepard Fairey, Blek le Rat, JR.

Classic modernism

Expressionism, Brücke, Der Blaue Reiter and the Bauhaus — the foundation of modern art, and still a reliably wanted market.

Sought, among others: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein, Gabriele Münter, Alexej von Jawlensky, August Macke, Lyonel Feininger, Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky.

Editions, multiples & prints

Where many collectors start. Edition size, condition and signature move the price sharply. This is exactly where a specialist look pays.

Sought, among others: screenprints by Andy Warhol, editions by Gerhard Richter, multiples by Joseph Beuys, prints by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring, David Hockney.

Photography

Above all the Düsseldorf Becher school and classic author photography have become a field of their own.

Sought, among others: Bernd & Hilla Becher, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff, Candida Höfer, Axel Hütte, August Sander, Helmut Newton, Wolfgang Tillmans.

Women artists of modern and post-war art

Museums and collections are buying these positions deliberately. Works that were undervalued for a long time are being reassessed.

Sought, among others: Gabriele Münter, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler, Bridget Riley, Maria Lassnig, Louise Bourgeois, Yayoi Kusama, Isa Genzken, Etel Adnan.

International positions

Korean Dansaekhwa, Japanese Gutai and Latin American modernism are traded internationally.

Sought, among others: Lee Ufan, Park Seo-Bo, Chung Sang-Hwa, Kazuo Shiraga, Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Lygia Clark.

Scope

What I take on

  • Single works — paintings, works on paper, sculpture, editions, photographs
  • Collections — private collections that grew over time, including mixed holdings
  • Estates — clearing with valuation, sorting and sale
  • Communities of heirs — a neutral valuation as the basis for a fair division

Process

Three steps

Enquiry

Photographs of the front, the reverse, the signature and the frame, plus invoices, gallery labels or certificates where you have them.

A view

I check attribution, provenance, the catalogue raisonné and condition, and compare the work with recent auction and trade results. You receive a realistic figure.

Purchase or placement

I buy the work directly and pay when we agree. Or I place it with a collector or consign it to the auction that fits, on a success fee and with no costs in advance.

Questions

Asked often.

What does the first look cost?

Nothing. The first view from your photographs and papers is free and without obligation.

I have no certificate. Is that a problem?

Not necessarily. A great deal can be clarified through catalogues raisonnés, gallery and exhibition papers, or the estate that looks after the artist. Where an expert opinion is needed, I say so.

How discreet is this?

Entirely confidential. Names, addresses and works are not passed on without your explicit agreement.

Do you only work in NRW?

Visits on site are everyday work across North Rhine-Westphalia. For larger collections and estates I also come further.

Purchase

Modern art I buy here.

Send photographs of the front, the reverse and the signature. I will tell you whether I buy the work or whether placement is the better path. Silver, jewellery, porcelain, furniture and other fields do not belong here — they run through Böcker Fine Art.
